Elevate Labs is a fully distributed company of voracious learners and passionate doers, and we are driven by our vision to help billions lead healthy, joyful, and productive lives.
This summer, in the wake of the acts of injustice against Black Americans — George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Christian Cooper, and countless others — we realized that we cannot truly succeed in our mission to improve people’s lives without first addressing and improving the diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) of our company.
At Elevate Labs, we believe that mental wellness is for everyone — regardless of age, race, gender, nationality, or socioeconomic status. To this end, we have decided to provide a free year of Balance, our personalized meditation app, to anyone who signs up during 2021.
We made this decision for a couple of reasons:
First, it furthers our company mission and vision. We are on a mission to help people discover their mind’s limitless potential, and we’re driven by our vision to help billions lead healthy, joyful, and productive lives. Cost can be a barrier to getting mental wellness support…
This tiny punctuation mark can hugely impact the meaning of a sentence.
To help you understand the power of a comma, let’s start with a quick quiz:
“Taylor sent wedding invitations to her parents, the king and the queen.”
Quiz question: How many people did Taylor invite to her wedding?
If you said two, you’re right: Taylor’s a princess, and her parents are the king and queen.
And if you said four, you’re also right: Taylor’s not a princess, but she still wants the king and queen at her wedding.
That’s because this sentence, as written, is ambiguous, meaning you…
Did you know that people have around 50,000 separate thoughts each day? That’s some 35 thoughts per minute, or about one new thought every two seconds. Moreover, most people have just an eight-second attention span before getting distracted. And once we get off-track, it can take an average of 25 minutes to return to our original task.
Our always-on society actually rewards us for this type of “multitasking.” Rather than focusing on what we’re currently doing, we spend our lives rushing from one thing to the next and worrying about what we still have to do.
Improving our ability to…
A little more than 20 years ago, the Academy of American Poets declared April to be National Poetry Month. For the occasion, we thought we’d highlight what poetry accomplishes — beyond sounding nice and fueling our imaginations, of course. Poetry also triggers parts of the brain tied to reward, emotion, and memory, strengthens overall cognitive health, and encourages self-reflection.
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves.
Poetry expresses ideas and emotions through careful control of sound and rhythm. It’s one of the oldest language structures, and it’s still found all over the place, if we look. We grow up reading…

It’s Valentine’s Day, so love is in the air — and so is spending!
For many of us, Valentine’s Day marks an occasion to buy a card and box of chocolates for that special someone. In fact, the average American is expected to spend nearly $150 on Valentine’s Day gifts, and total national spending will reach some $19.6 billion.
But this year, we encourage you to view Cupid’s holiday as an opportunity to dig deeper and take time to nurture those in your social circle: romantic…

Everyone’s born creative, and it’s a skill we can improve with practice.
It’s amazing how, as children, we effortlessly transform bathtubs into submarines and blankets into forts. Our imaginations come easily, and our creativity is shameless.
Unfortunately, societal pressures stifle that innate creativity as we grow. Schools teach us to follow directions and find the “right” answers. We also become hyper-aware of how others perceive us, and our self-judgement skyrockets. As a result, we begin to censor our ideas and opt for safe choices, eventually convincing ourselves that we’re simply not creative.
However, that imaginative spark we had as children…
